Support Our School

Volunteer Program

"I really appreciate how you and the school staff continue to explore significant issues in curriculum and learning and are able to articulate your ideas, as formative as they might be sometimes, for the school community. You all not only keep us informed of activities of the school and how we can participate, but you also help us to be tuned into the ongoing process of creating and enhancing the school culture and community."

- Parent of a 2008-09 4th Grade Student

We believe that volunteers are an important part of the fabric of the school and offer an opportunity to enrich the learning experience for students and their families. The Green School has developed a volunteer program that both enhances the capacity of the school to support student learning and strengthens the school's ties with parents and the community.

Volunteers at The Green School support several different aspects of our educational program:

  • Parent Committees - We have five parent committees – Fundraising, Outreach, Green, Afterschool Club, and the Family Connection Committee. The committees meet monthly and plan activities that support the work of the school and foster strong relationships among Green School families and between Green School families and the school.
  • Gardens - The Green School is installing a number of gardens at our new site. These gardens closely connect to classroom investigations, serve as outdoor classrooms, and provide food for school cooking projects. Volunteers are an integral part of the installation and maintenance of these gardens.
  • Field trips - Field trips are an essential part of the curriculum at The Green School and are designed to support the year-long investigation in each classroom. Volunteers help students engage in the field work on each trip.
  • Dining Room - It is part of our mission that our students enjoy a healthful meal in a relaxed atmosphere, so that lunchtime is similar to a family meal at home. Volunteer help in the dining room is vital to helping us create this atmosphere. Dining room volunteers help maintain a tone of civility and calm in the lunchroom by helping students choose foods that keep their bodies healthy, open their food containers and packages, have interesting conversations at their tables, and clean up after eating.
  • Outdoor investigations - Students at The Green School participate in a variety of semester-long, environmental investigations. Teachers regularly take their students outside to complete field work related to these investigations. Safety and management of an entire class of children outside the classroom are always a concern. Volunteers assist with these outdoor investigations to decrease the adult to student ratio and to support students in their work outside the classroom.
  • Classroom projects & activities - Volunteers support the teaching and learning in our classrooms, particularly during the Investigations portion of the day when our students are often engaged in hands-on activities to explore science and social studies concepts.
  • Monthly luncheons - We plan to host one themed luncheon each month at which community members with expertise in various areas (e.g. artists, businesspeople, university professors, musicians, and environmental educators) are invited to dine and share their expertise with our students.
